Hard water can contribute to mineral scale on fixtures, inside some appliances, and in certain plumbing conditions. But it should not be treated as the automatic explanation for leaks, clogs, corrosion, low pressure, or appliance failure.
Low pressure can come from supply issues, valves, regulators, pipe size, localized blockage, or other causes. Leaks and corrosion depend on pipe material, water chemistry, age, installation, and other conditions. A white deposit on a fixture does not prove that the same mechanism is damaging the entire plumbing system.
An ion-exchange softener can reduce calcium and magnesium. A sediment filter removes suspended particles. Neither device is automatically the right answer for every plumbing complaint, and neither should be sold as a guaranteed way to eliminate repairs or extend appliance life.
